Friday Five: Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day

If you have a mom that enjoys being fit and getting outside, here are some ideas of what you can do with her this Mother’s Day instead of the usual brunch and flowers. Stay in Southeast Michigan, road trip to another city in-state, or go out-of-state–whichever you choose, we bet she will love spending time with you while working up a sweat. Ask her to join you in one of these events this weekend in honor of Mother’s Day:

1. For Women Only 5K: Ypsilanti, MI

Ladies, run or walk this 5k with your lovely mother, sisters, and daughters in Ypsilanti this Mother’s Day. The Ann Arbor Track Club is hosting this event at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Campus, and will hold a post-run yoga class starting at 9:45 am. New for 2013, runners can participate in teams in one of five categories: mother/daughter, sister/sister, grandmother/granddaughter, and friend/friend. Registration is open until online until May 10 at 11pm or you can register the day of from 7:30-9 am.

2. The Mother’s Day 5k: Traverse City, MI

With this 5k, you and your mom will do more than just run. This race benefits Giving 1 Family at a Time, helping families in the Grand Traverse Region by choosing deserving families and doing whatever it takes to get them financially stable. In addition to receiving a glow from running and helping the local community, your mother or grandmother will receive a flower at the end of the race. Registration is open until race day, and packet pick up is this weekend, so pack up the car and head on up to Traverse City and celebrate your mom.

The event is great for all ages and cyclists of all skill levels as you get to choose the route you want to ride. The Flying Rhino Cycling Club has set up rest stops along all four routes. Registration begins at 7:30 am and the ice cream social at 10:30 am. There is still time to register online, and don’t forget your helmets!
