Friday Five: Enjoy the Long Memorial Day Weekend

Looking to do something out of the ordinary for Memorial Day, maybe participate in a new event or visit someplace new in Michigan? Participate in one of these weekend-long events, try out a triathlon, or go on a bike ride across the Thumb or Keweenaw for a Memorial Day weekend you will always remember

1. Island Lake Triathlon, Spring: Brighton, MI

Whether it is your first or twentieth triathlon, head up to Brighton this Memorial Day weekend to kick off your triathlon season! Try out their new Olympic distance event or stick with their usual shorter distance, all are welcome to participate. The sprint race is a 0.5 mi swim, 12.4 mi bike, and 3.1 mi run. The new Olympic event is about double the length, with a 0.9 mi swim, 24.8 mi bike, and 6.2 mi run.  Registration is still open for the Saturday, May 25 event.

2. Ride the Keweenaw 2013: Copper Harbor, MI

Pack up the bikes and make your way toward the Keweenaw for an entire weekend of biking events, May 24-26. Explore the Keweenaw, eat some BBQ, gather with other cyclists for group rides, and celebrate the weekend in the beautiful Upper Peninsula.  A variety of clinics will be held during the weekend as well. All are welcome, but if you would like to reserve a BBQ spot, donate $25 each online to help plan for food, kids’ meals are $10 and can be paid onsite.

3. 10th Annual Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Race: Mackinaw City, MI

This is one of only two opportunities to run across the Mackinac Bridge each year, and is held this year on May 25.  The deadline has passed for mail-in registration, but runners can still sign up online until May 22 or onsite May 24.  The entire course length is 5.6 miles. Hang out on Mackinac Island or in Mackinaw City until dark to see the Memorial Weekend Fireworks Celebration over the Straits of Mackinac!

4. Tour de Frankenmuth: Frankenmuth, MI

Frankenmuth is hosting a weekend of biking events for Memorial Day, with a road race Saturday, May 25, and the Gran Fondo di Thumb May 26, a 40, 65, 90, or 130 mile ride. There are a multitude of kids events as well, so bring the whole family and spend the long weekend biking and enjoying Frankenmuth!

5. Novi Memorial Day Run: Novi, MI

Don’t have time for an entire weekend away? You can still get outside for a race this Memorial Day, as nearby Novi is hosting an Elite Mile, 10K, 5K Run/Walk, and a One Mile Family Run with a parade to follow! Registration is still open, online registration closes May 26 but there is an option to register on race day at the course.
