“Friday” Five: 5 Can’t-Miss February Events

By: Scott McMahon

Yes, it’s not Friday. But can’t we pretend for a few minutes? We want to present some of the best events in Michigan happening this upcoming month, and since February only has 28 days, we figured why not make our list a few days early?

February is a time for frigid weather and snow (tell that to the 50-degree temperatures this week), so what is there to do outside? Ask no more:

1. Kahtoola Michigan Mountain Run – Clarkston – Feb. 3

One of many events offered on Super Bowl Sunday so you don’t have to feel guilty about the wings, chips, and beer that you will inevitably consume during the big game. Pine Knob hosts this 8K/4K event that will take runners across the snowy and icy terrain of the Pine Knob Ski Area. Now in its third year, the Mountain Run billed as more of a fun run event, but the competition will still be there. Here’s a tip: wear snowshoes.

2. Grand Rapids Urban Adventure Race: Winter Edition – Cannonsburg Ski Area – Feb. 9

I think we’ll let race director Mark VanTongeren’s description speak for itself:

Join us on February 9, 2013 for the largest winter adventure race in the United States. You and your teammate will tackle snowbiking, snowshoeing, the infamous hair-raising tubing run, along with on- and off-trail running, orienteering and secret Amazing Race-like challenges. Speaking of secrets, expect a huge surprise this year like nothing we’ve ever done before. Our lips are sealed! The Grand Rapids Urban Adventure Race: Winter Edition. It’s a race like no other.

I don’t know about you, but that just pumps me up.

3. Tahquamenon Snowshoe Race – Paradise – Feb. 16

Beautiful waterfalls and a course that is no stranger to Lake Effect snow. Add those together and you get the Tahquamenon Snowshoe Race in the Upper Peninsula. Race options include a Kids 800-meter, a 5K, and a 15K for those who just want to keep going. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Falls and amazing scenery from surrounding forests, all while battling to keep your ground.

4. State Street Mile & Winter Sports Weekend – Hart – Feb. 15-16

Head to Oceana County for the Hart-Pentwater Winterfest, and take part in a multitude of athletic activities throughout the weekend. Start with broomball on Friday night before strapping on the running shoes for the State Street Mile on Saturday morning. After the brisk jog, grab your poles and skis and do some cross-country skiing at John Gurney Park. Festivities conclude with Snow-Putt Golf and an ice fishing tournament.

5. Tri Winter Cup – Copper Harbor – Feb. 23

Close out February with a winter triathlon of sorts – winter sport enthusiasts can pick from an 8.67-mile ski race, snowshoe race, or Anything race. Choose one event or try for the Tri Winter Cup by completing all three races. Point of clarification: the “Anything” mode of transportation must be human-powered. Enjoy the miles of backcountry trails that are just waiting to be explored by eager skiers, snowshoers, and bikers.
