Friday 5: Upcoming Events in January/Early February

By: Scott McMahon

Happy New Year to all of you! We hope you enjoyed the holiday season, and had a chance to unwind and relax with friends and family.

But enough about 2012, let’s look at 2013! It’s only four days into the year at time of publication, and we already have a lot to be excited about in the world of outdoor sports. Cyclocross Nationals and Worlds will be held in the United States this January and February. The list of marathons held throughout the country continues to climb. And Olympic Trials for the 2014 Sochi Games will begin late in the year.

I may have gotten slightly ahead of myself. It’s still only January 4, which means we still have almost the entire month left. So let’s take a look at five can’t-miss events happening in the next 31 days. Get your calendars ready!

1. Bigfoot Snowshoe Race – Traverse City

Head up to Timber Ridge Resort just outside of Traverse City for the Bigfoot 5K and 10K on January 19. The race takes place on a hilly yet manageable course that snowshoers of any level can take on. Bigfoot also serves as a Midwest qualifier for the U.S. National Championship in Bend, Oregon in March.

2. The Snowman’s Half Marathon/10K/5K – Mt. Pleasant

For the winter runners, Mt. Pleasant will host the Snowman’s Half Marathon/10K/5K on January 26, as the first leg of the Michigan Half Series’ winter circuit. Finishers will receive a custom T-shirt and medal, and will earn points towards the overall Michigan Half Series point standings. A 10K and 5K will also be offered for those who want to get a good winter run in at a shorter distance.

3. Noquemanon Ski Marathon – Marquette

If you’re looking for a test of winter endurance, mark the weekend of January 26-27. Skiers will embark on a 50K journey from Ishpeming, and travel through the hills and valleys of northern Michigan before finishing at the Superior Dome in downtown Marquette. Don’t think you’re quite ready for a 50K race? No problem. Noquemanon offers shorter ski races, as well as snowshoe races, a snowbike race, and more.

4. LOHS GAP 6th Annual Winter MTB and Fat Bike Race – Lake Orion

Get back on your bike and sign up the for the Lake Orion High School GAP Winter MTB and Fat Bike Race on February 2. Riders will travel around a 5K loop anywhere from one to four times, depending on skill level. Take on the infamous “sledding hill” that has made this race so popular. Fat bike and mountain bike categories are also available.

5. Super 5K Road Race – Novi

Most people don’t see the morning of the Super Bowl (Feb. 3 this year) as a time to run. But for years now, runners have made it out to burn off some calories before the chicken wings hit at night. Still not convinced? Relax and enjoy a beer during the game in the pint glass that the first 2,000 finishers will receive. Not a bad parting gift if you ask me.
