Celebrate Thanksgiving With a Run

By: Scott McMahon

We previewed the top Halloween runs around Michigan last month, and we move on to Thanksgiving for this month. Turkey trots have become some of the most popular gatherings around the holiday season, as many have combined the joy of running with food drives and Thanksgiving themes. Check out these runs around our area, and be sure to visit our calendar for more!

Ann Arbor Turkey Trot

After the excitement of Halloween, get into the Thanksgiving spirit with the Ann Arbor Turkey Trot. Champions for Charity will host the 5K, 10K, and Kids Mile events on Saturday, November 10, at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter. Think you’re tough enough to handle more than just one race? Enter the Iron Turkey and take on both the 5K and 10K back-to-back. Runners who complete the Iron Turkey will receive a special Iron Turkey shirt and medal. The Ann Arbor Turkey Trot will help support both the UM Project Healthy Schools and the CFC Fit Kid Champions Program.

Roseville “Big Bird” Run

For the 34th consecutive year, the city of Roseville will host the “Big Bird” Run. The 2012 version will take place on Sunday, November 11, and will include a 4K, 10K and 1-mile run. Each race begins and ends at the Roseville Recreation Center, and each course remains relatively flat throughout. The last three years have seen over 2,500 total runners participate in the longstanding tradition of the “Big Bird” Run, so don’t miss out in 2012—as the name may suggest, all finishers will be entered into a drawing for turkeys and other prizes.

Lansing Turkeyman Trot

What better way is there to prepare for a Thanksgiving feast than by running in the morning? Work off some calories before you indulge in turkey and stuffing on Thursday, November 22, in downtown Lansing. Last year, more than 3,000 runners lined up at Lansing Community College to run the scenic 5K throughout the city, and this year should be no different. Proceeds from the race will go to benefit Youth Track Clubs in Michigan, helping young runners attend national track and cross country meets.

Fifth Third Turkey Trot

Work out before you pig out! The Fifth Third Turkey Trot will take place on Thursday, November 22, in downtown Detroit. Be a part of the Thanksgiving tradition of the Motor City, and the 30th consecutive year of the Turkey Trot. Participants can choose the Turkey Trot 10K, the Stuffing Strut (5K), or the Mashed Potato Mile, and every finisher will receive a commemorative 30th anniversary medal at the finish line. Costumes are also encouraged. A Parade of Costumes will take place before the first race, and prizes will be given for the most original designs. The perfect way to start your Thanksgiving holiday!
