Top Riders, Close Finishes Highlight 2012 Michigan Challenge

By: Scott McMahon

The best cyclists throughout the state of Michigan made the 2012 Michigan Bicycle Racing Association’s Michigan Challenge one of the best to date. Races were held from the end of April through the beginning of September, with riders accumulating points for Top-15 finishes. In order to qualify for the Michigan Challenge, cyclists had to compete in a criterium, time trial, and a road race. Failure to do so resulted in a disqualification from awards, regardless of overall point standings.

After the final race, riders’ top eight scores were added to determine the final rankings. In the Elite Men 1/2 division, Sven Baumann, of Lake Orion, narrowly outlasted Plymouth’s Adam York, in a battle that came down to the final weekend. Baumann accumulated 143.5 points throughout the season, while York managed 129 points. York appeared at more than half of the 21 scored events, giving himself a greater chance to emerge victorious, but Baumann’s four wins in his seven events pushed him over the top. Aside from the four wins, Baumann had two more Top 10 finishes—York finished the season with ten Top 10s, but could not reach the top of the podium. Mac Brennan, of East Jordan, finished in a comfortable third place position, with 122.5 points.

In the Elite Women 1/2 division, Lowell’s Amy Stauffer dominated the competition, cruising to a 199.5-point performance that included three wins and Top 5 finishes in all nine of her events. Fusion/Livestrong teammates Sarah Demerly and Alicia Trevino battled it out for second place, with Demerly coming out slightly ahead. The Berkley native finished the season with 157.5 points, compared to the 155.5-point mark for Saginaw’s Trevino. Mackenzie Woodring, of Belmont, had enough points to qualify for second place (198), but did not complete a time trial during the course of the season, thus eliminating her from award contention.
