UPCROSS Heads to Copper Harbor for Keweenaw Cup

The UPCROSS Cyclocross Series returns to action this weekend in Copper Harbor to host the Keweenaw Cup Cyclocross Race—a two-day festival of cyclocross action to be held on October 20 and 21. The 2012 races mark the fifth consecutive running of the Keweenaw Cup races, and the fourth year in conjunction with the UPCROSS Series.

Saturday’s events begin in downtown Copper Harbor with the Downtown Hoedown, in which riders will race through the city streets and out into Clyde’s Field. The Red Jacket Cycling Team will host a post-race dinner following the events, and live musicians will be on hand to entertain all riders throughout the evening.

Sunday will feature the Top of the World Smackdown—a smoother and faster race, but with the added challenge of several climbs. Racers will gather at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge for a difficult battle against the elements, and a chance to move up in the UPCROSS standings.

Heading into competition on October 20, Brian Geshel leads the Men A category with 122 points, including one win and Top 3 finishes in all four races thus far. Topher Chase sits in second place with 91 points, after registering Top 5 finishes in three of four races. Mik Kilpela controls third place with 79 points, after only running three races of the four overall. Reigning champion Ryan Tervo ranks 13th heading into competition this weekend with 31 points—a second place finish in his only race of the series.

In the Women A division, 2011 champion Nicole Alexander has a commanding lead over the rest of the competition, totaling 123 points through four races. Alexander has won two races already, and has Top 3 finishes in all four of her races. Lindsay Bean is currently in second place with 94 points, and has three Top 5 finishes thus far. Christina Bennet holds third place, amassing 84 points after just three competitions.

The entire weekend schedule, along with lodging and additional information, can be found at the Keweenaw Cup website. For updated point standings, check out the overall standings on the UPCROSS website.
