Our Friday Five: What to do in September?

September is upon us!

We all know what this means—school is back in session, no more 100° afternoons, and autumn is just around the corner. September is also a great time to get involved in an outdoor activity—Michigan offers plenty of competitive races along with several events just for fun.

As you may have guessed by now, our Friday Five this week features five great events to take part in during the month of September.

1. Mackinac Island 8 Mile Run/Walk (September 8)

Not only does it give you an excuse to visit one of Michigan’s most beautiful places, but you also get to run the perimeter of the entire island. If you’re feeling spontaneous today, head to Mackinac and get involved! Check out our full description of the event online.

2. Clothing Optional Run (September 15)

Union City is the place to be for those of you willing to show some skin. Join the folks at Turtle Lake Resort as they put on their second race of the year—this one by popular demand. No need to worry about what running shirt to wear here, just shoes and a smile. Visit their website for more information and for how to register.

3. Leelanau Harvest Tour (September 16)

Take a relaxing trip up to Leelanau County next weekend for a beautiful bike tour through the northern Michigan countryside. You will pass by orchards, wineries, dunes, and quaint villages as you ride around the peninsula. Take your pick of the 20, 40, 65, or 100-mile tours, and enjoy the scenery that the Leelenau Peninsula has to offer. You can find out more about the Harvest Tour on the Cherry Capital Cycling Club website.

4. Le Tour de Donut (September 22)

Like cycling? Like donuts? Why not combine the two? Head up to Greenville for Le Tour de Donut, a 30-mile bike race (road and mountain) that also tests your donut-eating abilities. Make sure you stop at the two rest stations along the course and grab a donut or two—race rules state that for every donut consumed at the “Donut Stations,” three minutes will be deducted from your time. Want more information? Here’s where to find it.

5. Grand Adventure Race (September 30)

Cap off your exciting month of events with the Grand Adventure Race in Grand Ledge. This triathlon features a two-mile kayak loop on the Grand River, followed by an 11.5-mile road bike course, and ending with a 5K run. Want to bring along some friends? The Grand Adventure Race offers 2-3 person relay teams as well! Check out their website and register as soon as possible.

Of course, you can find more events like these on our online calendar. What events are you looking forward to this month—let us know! Who knows, we may be right there with you.
